Michigan Works Assistance Program
Lost Your Job and Considering Teaching?
If you are unemployed, laid off, or lost your job due to outsourcing, you may qualify for federal grant funding to become a certified teacher.
#TEACH is an approved provider through Michigan Training Connect, making eligible students able to receive funding through:
WIOA
The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act provides up to $5,000 toward tuition for qualifying individuals, including low income adults and dislocated workers.
Funding may also cover test fees, prep materials, books, supplies, and other support services.
These are federal grants and do not need to be repaid.Trade Adjustment Assistance
If you lost your job due to overseas outsourcing, you may qualify for additional retraining benefits through TAA.
Eligible individuals may receive paid training, income support after unemployment benefits expire, health insurance assistance, and even relocation support.In some cases, WIOA and TAA benefits can be combined for additional support.
To check eligibility, contact your local Michigan Works office or call 1-800 285-WORKS and ask for the WIOA or TAA coordinator.

Michigan Future Educator Fellowship (10K)
Awards up to $10,000
IMPORTANT: READ ALL DIRECTIONS BEFORE APPLYING
Basic Eligibility
To qualify, you must:
- File the FAFSA before completing the Fellowship application
- Apply through the MiSSG Student Portal
- Be admitted and fully enrolled in #TEACH
- Admission letter received
- Enrollment fee paid
- Program fee paid or on payment plan
- Be pursuing initial teacher certification
- Have a 3.0 GPA
- Be a Michigan resident
- Be enrolled full time and making satisfactory academic progress
If awarded, any funds you paid before the award will be reimbursed.
Renewal
Renewable for up to 3 years if you:
- Maintain full time enrollment
- Complete required credits
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA and satisfactory academic progress
- File FAFSA annually
- Remain a Michigan resident
Service Commitment
Recipients agree to teach in Michigan:
• 1 year of funding = 3 year teaching commitment
• 2 years = 4 year commitment
• 3 years = 5 year commitment
If you do not complete the program or service requirement, the award converts to a 0% interest loan with a 10 year repayment term.
Award Amount
Up to $10,000 per year or the cost of tuition and mandatory fees, whichever is less.
Degree Programs & Graduate Credit Options for Michigan
Bachelor’s Degree Program
Earn your bachelor’s degree while completing your teacher certification program.
This option is ideal for individuals who have not yet completed a bachelor’s degree and want to work toward becoming a certified teacher.
Graduate Credit
Receive graduate‑level credit for coursework completed as part of your certification program.
Credits may be transferable toward a master’s degree.
Master’s Degree Programs
Earn your master’s degree while completing your teacher certification program.
Designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree and want to advance their education and credentials.
Gift Cards Available
Gift cards can be applied toward program costs and make a great gift for future educators beginning their certification journey.
