The Michigan Future Educator Fellowship will offer $10,000 scholarships to up to 2,500 future educators every year. This is a new program and the application is currently open.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, you must:

• File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • You must file the FAFSA before completing the Fellowship application
  • NOTE: You will not see #TEACH in the dropdown when completing the FAFSA. As such, the State of Michigan Department of Treasury states that you may file the FAFSA and report any school you wish (i.e., prior undergraduate institution). The Fellowship application will allow you to then report #TEACH as your institution. At that point the Department of Treasury will change your institution in their state record to #TEACH
  • If you already filed a current year FAFSA, there is no need to file a new one.
• Create a portal account in the MiSSG Student Portal
• Complete the application in your MiSSG Student Portal for MI Future Educator Fellowship
• Be admitted and fully enrolled in #TEACH
  • This means if you have not paid your enrollment fee and your program fee (payment plan or in full), you will not qualify for the award.
  • In order to be considered fully enrolled, the following criteria must be met:
    • Admission letter received
    • Enrollment fee paid
    • Program fee paid (i.e., select a payment plan and make the first payment or pay in full)
    • NOTE: If you are awarded the fellowship, any funds paid by you prior to the award will be reimbursed.
• Be pursuing initial teacher certification
• Have a 3.0 Cumulative GPA in your current #TEACH coursework OR if you recently enrolled in #TEACH and have yet to complete any courses, a 3.0 in your prior undergraduate or graduate coursework will suffice (GPA and degree awarded date must be on transcript).
• Be a high school graduate
• Be a Michigan resident
  • If you are a dependent student, your parent on your FAFSA must also be a Michigan resident since July 1 of the previous year
• Be enrolled full time (or its equivalency if participating through an Alternative Certification Program).  AT #TEACH, as long as you are enrolled in courses and making satisfactory academic progress, you are considered full time.

Renewal Requirements

Fellowship is renewable for up to 3 years if you:

• Maintain continuous full-time enrollment
• Achieve at least 24 credits per year or the equivalent of full-time participation for individuals enrolled in an alternative certification program. 
• Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
• Maintain a 3.0 GPA
• Participate in relevant academic and career advising programs offered by the school
• File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

• Maintain Michigan residency

Service Commitment

• If you receive one year of funding from the MI Future Educator Fellowship you agree to work as a certified teacher in a public, nonpublic, or public preschool program in Michigan for three years.
• If you receive two years of funding from the MI Future Educator Fellowship you agree to work as a certified teacher in a public, nonpublic, or public preschool program in Michigan for four years.
• If you receive three years of funding from the MI Future Educator Fellowship you agree to work as a certified teacher in a public, nonpublic, or public preschool program in Michigan for five years.
• If you teach in a critical needs district your service obligation may be less.

Award Amount

$10,000 per year or the cost of tuition at the in-district, resident rate + mandatory fees per year, whichever is less. Other tuition-specific aid may reduce this award.
