Beyond the Certificate: What CAEP Examines in an Educator Preparation Program
Earning a teaching certificate is a real accomplishment. However, when choosing an educator preparation program, two people can hold the same credential and have had very different preparation behind it. That gap is why national accreditation exists. When you weigh an educator preparation program against other routes into the classroom, the useful question is not just whether it helps you get licensed; it is who evaluated the program’s rigor and what standards they measured it against. In teacher preparation, that independent standard is set by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
State Approval and Accreditation for Teaching Are Not the Same Thing
While state approval and national accreditation are often used interchangeably, they serve two distinct purposes in your teaching path.
State approval grants a program the legal authority to recommend candidates for certification within that specific state. Because each state department of education establishes its own licensure requirements and testing expectations, approval in one state does not automatically transfer to another. #TEACH holds both. We have held state board of education approval since 2018, in states including Michigan, North Carolina, Indiana, Arizona, and Alabama. CAEP granted us accreditation in fall 2024.1
What CAEP Examined in Our Educator Preparation Program
An accreditation evaluation is only as meaningful as the standards it measures. CAEP evaluated #TEACH against seven rigorous national standards and confirmed all seven were met.2 Four of those standards directly govern the quality of your coursework, coaching, and clinical preparation as a candidate:
- Clinical partnerships and practice: Whether you teach in real classrooms, with people who are responsible for supporting you.
- Candidate quality and selectivity: Who gets admitted alongside you.
- Satisfaction with preparation: What people who finished the program say about it.
- Quality assurance: Whether the program tracks its own results instead of asking you to take its word.
The remaining three standards cover content and pedagogical knowledge, fiscal and administrative capacity, and Title IV compliance.
What the Accreditation Covers, and When It Renews
Accreditation has a scope and an end date. Ours is at the initial-licensure level, which means preparation for a first teaching credential. It covers three programs.3
- #TEACH Elementary Certification Program
- #TEACH Secondary Certification Program
- #TEACH P-12 Certification Program
The term runs through fall 2031. The next site review is scheduled for spring 2031.3
Keep in mind that accreditation is not permanent. It has to be earned again, so the evidence a program collects between reviews is doing real work.
Two Questions Worth Asking Any Program
Seeing that a teacher preparation program is accredited is a good start, but it should not be the end of your research. Two simple questions can help you understand what that accreditation really means:
- Accredited by whom? CAEP is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation for educator preparation.4
- Accredited for which programs, and at what level? A provider can hold accreditation for some programs and not others. The program list matters as much as the label.
When researching teacher preparation programs, look beyond the accreditation label. Providers should be able to clearly identify their accreditor and explain which programs and levels are included.
